Bike Scheme - Call for volunteers

8/12/2021

Our very popular bike scheme has been going from strength to strength under Adrian Ball’s excellent management. Since February this year he has delivered and repaired 75 bikes for various refugee families (including 10 for newly-arrived Afghan families) and delivered 36 to young asylum seekers under the care of the County Council, as well as 7 for adult asylum seekers.

This has enabled people who have very little money to get to the shops or college and to get exercise and is invaluable to them.

Adrian is now working on a plan to source bikes via the County Council to supplement donations from supporters, and to have repairs carried out for us by charities with professional mechanics, building on an existing arrangement with Breaks Manor in Hatfield.

We are very grateful to Adrian for all his work and are now appealing for volunteers to continue this wonderful scheme when he takes over as HWR’s Treasurer in 2022.

We are looking for :
  • A scheme manager - to handle the logistics of the scheme.
  • Several people, preferably based in different areas of the county, who will collect and store (briefly) donated bikes, deliver repaired bikes to families and, if necessary, help them with punctures or minor repairs.
People with mechanics’ qualifications or experience will be especially welcome.

If you are interested in helping refugees and asylum seekers in this way please contact  Adrian  adrian@hwsf.org.uk  to find out more.
