Unicef UK is asking Amber Rudd to fix the law that keeps refugee families apart. At the moment, grandmothers and brothers are not recognised as family under UK refugee law. To learn more or sign the petition, follow the link: tinyurl.com/ydgwmhsf

September fund-raising appeal

Dear members and supporters,

We urgently need to raise £5000 between now and the end of the year to cover activities and donations planned.   Hertfordshire is now home to nearly 30 families who have fled the conflict in Syria.

Settling in a new country and community, adapting to a different culture and learning a new language, often from scratch, must be extremely hard.

With your help we have been able to support families by
  • enabling each family to have a TV and paying the licence fee for the first year
  • providing lawn mowers and gardening tools
  • sourcing furniture and household goods
  • offering welcome meals and food packs
  • organising events for the families and helping with travel costs
This summer we have also been able to give each family £50 towards summer activities with their children and we would like to be able to do this for Christmas as well.

We are expecting more families by the end of the year and would like to be able to continue to offer this support and vital help with integration.

A regular monthly donation – gift-aided if possible – will enable us to continue to do this and more.   Making a monthly donation of £3, £5, £10, £15 or £20 would be highly appreciated and make a big difference to the families.  A £3 donation is only the price of a cup of coffee.

You can set up a monthly donation through a standing order to Herts Welcomes Syrian Families Barclays Bank Account number 43149080 Sort Code 20-03-18.

If you don’t feel able to make a regular donation, a one-off donation will make a difference too.  Gift aided is better still.   You can do this by bank transfer or a cheque to Herts Welcomes Syrian Families and sent to Mick Hayter at Hollybank, Common Lane, Kings Langley, Herts, WD4 8BL.

Please let us know if you make a bank transfer by sending an email to Mick at treasurer@hwsf.org.uk  with your name and the area you live in.

Supermarket community charity schemes can raise several hundred pounds. Pick up a form at your local store and contact Catherine Henderson catherine@hwsf.org.uk if you would like to organise this.

Could your community group, church or mosque make a donation, hold a coffee morning or put on a fund-raising event?  Let us know if you would like to do this and we will send you some leaflets or even come and support.

Your donations have meant so much to the families so, with them, we thank you and we know we can rely on your continued support.

Irene Austin, Chair, and the HWSF Management Team
