Latest Progress Update
Here is a recent news release from St Albans Council:
Homes for Syrian refugees
15 March 2016
Two homes have been found to start the process of bringing Syrian refugee families to the St Albans District.
St Albans City and District Council is committed to taking in around ten refugees a year in each of the next five years.
Network Housing Group (NHG) – a housing association which manages affordable homes - offered the houses for use by the Council.
A rental contract will now be signed with the NHG and repair work carried out. The properties should be ready by the end of this month.
The Home Office - which is running the Government’s Syrian refugee scheme – is being kept informed of developments.
Once the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees identifies suitable Syrian families, they could arrive in the District as early as mid-May.
The Refugee Council has appointed a manager to look after the interests of Syrian refugees in Hertfordshire while the County Council will find school places.
An update on these issues is to be given to a meeting of the Council’s Cabinet on Thursday 17 March.
Councillor Brian Ellis, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: “We are committed as a Council to doing our bit to help with the Syrian refugee crisis.
“Securing suitable homes for refugees was an essential requirement and we have been working hard to achieve this.
“It is excellent news that we have made a breakthrough and found two properties with the help of Network Housing Group.
“This is a very important humanitarian cause and we know that it receives widespread support across the District.”
That's it for now!
